99 4Runner

Unread postby rockdawg84 » Wed Jun 09, 2010 12:06 pm

here it is. Sold the Wrangler and picked this up. 99 4runner SR5, 3.4 v6, 5speed. Gonna be a family light wheeler. it will be getting a Sonoran Steel lift, with a toyota e-locker in the rear and 35's. with 4.88's. I really miss having a rig I can just jump into and go do light stuff like the Gap or chiva without all the repairs and stuff that goes along with the 85. And A/C is nice too :naughty:

So Ive begun to collect some parts. so far I've picked up 2.5inch king coil overs with 2 sets of springs 550 and 650 so should be good as bumpers and stuff go on in the future. I got a FJ Cruiser rear axle that has a e-locker and Disc brakes, I got it for trading my stock wheels and tires :bluebounce: :bluebounce: :bluebounce: I'm gonna pick up a set of front FJZ80 coils for the rear that will produce about 4 inches of lift. I want to do a front axle hub swap that would let me use lockout hubs. I have found one in a junk yard near my house 50 bucks. its gonna be a fun project. by the way I will probably end up with a WMS track of 67inches. And yes im sure that someday it will get a SAS but for now just little projects that can be completed in one day or less to make my daily Driver just a little better off road with the AC on :thumb:

Well I spent the day installing the kings on my runner and put in some LC coils in the rear. Produced about 2.5 inches of lift in the front and 4 inches in the rear. pretty good rake but I really like it. Have a few issues to work out still. I need new rear shocks and I found a rear upper control arm that was totally missing the bushing. I have to research what to do about that.

I took about 25 pictures today to show what I had done, but unfortunately after the last photo (of the missing bushing in the UCA) I set the camera on the running board next to my phone and yes you guessed it, totally forgot that they were there. Drove off for a test drive :doh!: they were gone. I retraced my route and found my phone on the side of the road (almost a half mile from My house) but no camera. So all the pics are gone. I am going to look again tomorrow but pretty sure it is a lost cause.

ON the other hand I love the kings. the ride so sweet. soak up the bumps without any harshness. I love craigslist :bluebounce: I need new rear shocks and those are on order and should be here soon with an adjustable panhard bar and some new bump stops. Then its just tires and I'm ready to wheel in the joy of a Rig with AC. Won't be an extreme rig but fun to haul the family in :thumb:

Got the tires mounted up Saturday. they look great. So my handy 4inch grinder with cutoff wheel and my Big Freaking Hammer went to work. Not much work needed on the rear but the front took a while. I removed the Kings and mounted the tire and lifted it to full compression and began clearancing the wheel well. Pretty exhausting putting on and taking off a 35inch mud. But well worth the effort. I may need to do a little more hammer work when I get it out and really flex things up. Here is what it looks like. Tell me what you think. ;)

Still have some odds and ends left to take care of.

Rear bump stops
new Rear adjustable pan hard bar
front diff drop
and then install the rear FJ axle with the E-Locker

While perpetual motion is not possible this would serve nicely to just place one's head in the path of said device allowing a convenient hammer to head pummeling to take place with a minimum of effort.......dude, it's a piece of dom with a longer bolt ;)

don't overthink it, go to copperstate nut and bolt, I'll give you a couple pieces of dom. :p

or am I missing something?

Not missing anything buddy. Since i was getting a couple of other things from Steve I did go ahead and get the diff drop from him. At this point time is valuable and this allows me to just bolt stuff on and maybe get closer to driving up rice peak with you  this weekend I hope to install my diff drop, extended rear panhard bar, rear shocks and rear bumpstops. Then we can wheel this bad boy. :thumb:

By the way saw the rice peak pics. beautiful but looked a little wet. Give me a call and we will get you over to see the house this weekend. Maybe Sat?

little update. Got the rear bumper off and had my sliders come in but haven't got them on yet. Hopefully this week. any way got to go up rice peak on Saturday, and just up into the gap a little. This thing flexes like mad in the rear and the front is pretty good for IFS. anyway here are some cheesy poser pics ;)

Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark side and it holds Tice's truck together.

Thanks, I am loving it. The 3.4 has lots of power and it is wicked comfortable. Its gonna get some more little stuff but Im trying to keep it nice and yet capable. for hard core I have the 84 on 39.5's but summer wheeling this is absolutely the best.

Sadness has happened. A buddy who was borrowing my Runner went wheeling last friday night and flopped it on its side in the Gap just below the swithchbacks.   had to go recover it on Saturday. Still drives great but the roof and passangers B piller are toast. Yes it was a very poor choice but we are working through it :whip:

let me be the first to try this :scratching:

I've heard that duct tape will hold the rig together as well as the force so maybe I will try that. Actually I am picking up a 98 runner tomorrow with some engine problems but in great shape otherwise. Get some insurance money and buy the 99 back and let the madness continue.
