I wheeled that trail a few times through to 177 and wheeled the walnut canyon loop from the coke ovens several times. Not much to it. There's one big washout on the trail and a few wrong turns is possible if you haven't been there before.

i was just looking for something differant from the same ol shyt when it cools off.

if i'm thinking right,
it's the turn along the ridge before you go down the hill to the ovens, that goes down a rocky hill into a couple switch backs befor getting to the river.
i went riding my dirt bike with a group out there and the swore that was the way to the ovens. we made i to the river before they would listen to me about how to get there.it was fun coming back up that hill.

Yes, that's the way to battleaxe down that loose rocky hill to the gila just above the coke ovens and on parallel to the river until you come to the first road left. There you can take a left and keep on the high road to battleaxe or straight and go on until you drop in to a feeder wash and so on until you find yourself at the bottom of walnut canyon. Go up the canyon switchbacks to the high road and around the big hill to white canyon and down along the edge of the wilderness border. Stay center and when you are all the down in white canyon you need to go up and over a small hill to exit. Follow the trail out and after you go over the only boulder on the trail go on for a ways and take a right out of the wash to hit battleaxe road proper. Take it about five miles out to 177. Sounds easy huh. Watch out for that washout.

6-8 hours depending if you do walnut canyon and the coke ovens. Easier way out is through box canyon if you end up coming out after dark. 2 hour hwy drive to battleaxe/177 from picture rocks. 1 1/2 hour hwy back from florence.

i'm not far from you down avra valley.
was going to start off 177 and come back to FJ and the plan was to come out box canyon.
so 8hrs?
how many was in your group?
seems if i get more than 3 running i have to add a couple extras hours for the slow pokes. :D

well battle axe is passable.
it is rougher from the coke ovens out than battle axe.with the exeption of the last hill climb from the river to the ovens trail.

the trip was'nt without carnage though.i blew up my t case being heavy on the skin pedal climbing the hill right behind the ovens in 2wd,and the guy pulling me lost the studs holding the brake drum on before we made it back to the battle axe intersection.
needless to say friday was a long day,and sat was spent getting back in with parts to repair both zuks, which was another long day on no sleep.

i'll post pics when i get them.
