transfer case options

Unread postby blackd-out-chev » Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:18 pm

Well...I'm gonna start collecting parts to do the suspension and axles on the cherokee...it needs a slip yoke eliminator first off. So at 300 or so dollars...I'm wondering if I might be able to find someone selling a whole case that already has a sye and maybe the 4:1 kit. Or is there another option? Any opinions on this? Maybe ashman can chime in. I'm open to going $200 or so more for an upgraded case if I can find one. What do y'all think? 4.0 engine. Aw4 auto tranny. And I believe....241 tcase

Josh,

Some of the XJ's had a NP231J case. I think it was a J anyhow. But I do now alot of the XJ's had a 231 case. The best I can tell you is to keep an eye on Pirate if nobody here has one.

I gave up on those "litttle" t-cases awhle ago. The chains tend to stretch under hard use and grenade the case at the worst possible time.

Let me check on something. I might have an answer.
If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed replaced anyway.

COuldn't remember if the S-10 NP231 used a slip yoke or not. It does, so that idea is out. Unfortunately, you may be stuck buying the SYE kit. Try E-bone too.

What year trans?
There is a 21 spline/23 spline year split.

The best bang for the buck is to do a flipped d300, (23 spline) Will need a clocking ring spacer. It is a gear driven case fixed yokes. The 4:1 kit addition will cost more then your whole budget but will give you a good platform.

You can also look at doing a 231-D300 doubler.
Steve has a 21 spline 231 that could doubled to a d300 flipped.

both would require new drive shafts front and rear.

What will it cost me to slap a d300 in it vs just putn a sye in my stock case. Since I've got the toy I'm really gonna TRY not to use the xj as a hardcore wheeler even tho it seems like I end up beatn on everything harder then I "want" to. Lol. Mainly its gona be my river basher/winter wheeler/ jeep event wheeler. So the 4:1 kit isn't really a big priority. I'm fairly happy with how it runs with stock axle gears. When I swap the 44/9 in I'm gona go to 4:56s. Just wana get the best bang for my buck when I do my tcase...

Here's a good one for you Josh.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161815

If it was me I think I'd do the Dana 300 swap instead of a SYE. The 300 looks like a little more work, but it has the option of a 4:1 gearset later down the road. The 300 is right up there withthe 205 as far as strength is concerned too.

You'll have to cut the floor in your XJ if you want to clock it flat, but making a simple bolt on cover would be simple.

As far as cost. If you good at fabricating and can find a 300, then I would think it could be done for a couple hundred. A little more with driveshafts.
