Shifting into 2nd gear

Unread postby Crashnburk » Thu Dec 11, 2008 11:09 am

I just bought a 1998 Wrangler with manual transmission that has a new tranny and clutch. The jeep has trouble going smoothly into second gear mainly when the engine is cold. I was wondering if the body lift it has is causing the problem. The jeep has no suspension lift on it yet only a body lift. Any ideas out there?

Body lifts can affect linkages. I know nothing about Jeeps - however, if it is manual, the shifter is on the floor, thus there is no linkage to affect. Is the shifter handle hitting the body at all?

The handle doesn't. I am wondering if the shift boot is causing the problem.

Possibly. As you move the body up, it means the handle where it goes through the floor has to move further to get into gear. Possible that a stiff or restrictive boot could cause a bind.

Take the boot off and see if there's any difference. It'll also allow you to look in there and make sure the lift isn't causing any interference.

I had the same problem on my 99TJ when it was cold out.AX-15 trans.Using Redline MTL fluid made it much better but it didn't go away completely. Now running an NV3550-seems ok so far.
It used to be a JEEP thing-but most of that stuff broke!
